Education
A Board Certified periodontist, Dr. Somerville earned his DDS from the Ostrow School of Dentistry of the University of Southern California.  Following graduation, he completed an AEGD (general dentistry internship) in order to gain additional experience.  He was subsequently accepted to the Advanced Periodontology residency at USC.  In the interim, he practiced general dentistry in private practice.  A Southern California native, Dr. Somerville completed his residency training and also earned a Master of Science in Craniofacial Biology from the Graduate School of USC.

Professional Experience

Dr. Somerville has about a decade of experience as a periodontist, and has also taught in the university setting, conducted research, and practiced as a general dentist before completing specialty training.  Dr. Somerville considers specialists to inherently be leaders and strives to guide his colleagues in treatment plans and patient management.  

Areas of Expertise
Dr. Somerville practices the full scope of periodontics, including treatment of periodontitis, implant surgery, and grafting procedures.  

Awards & Memberships
Dr. Somerville was the recipient of the California Society of Periodontists Leadership Award in his residency.  He is a member of numerous organizations, including the California Society of Periodontists, the American Academy of Periodontology, the Western Society of Periodontology, the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Dental Association, and the California Dental Association.  He also enjoys attending international meetings and participates in the Osteology Foundation and the European Academy for Osseointegration.  A fun fact is that he earned a college scholarship for music performance.

Personal Statement
“One of the most important objectives I have with a patient is to assist him or her in fully understanding the diagnosis and recommendations.  It is critical that the patient feel completely comfortable with the treatment plan.”  Aware that visiting a specialist can be stressful, Dr. Somerville is known for bringing a lighthearted approach and lots of humor to patient care.  He reports that a very small percent of his jokes are actually funny.

Personal Interests
When Dr. Somerville is not meeting patients or performing surgery, he can often be found exploring a new country or engaging in a wide variety of outdoor activities, particularly snow skiing.
